Iran's President Rouhani to run for second term
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani applied on Friday for candidacy for the May 19 presidential elections, Iranian Tasnim news agency reports.
To note, the presidential elections in Iran are set to be held on 19 May. The registration of the candidates will remain open until April 15. The applicants will then be vetted by the Guardian Council to receive approval. Pursuant to the Iranian law, that process can be extended for 4 days.
More than 860 candidates have been registered so far. The list of the applicants include Ex-President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, former Iranian Vice-President Hamid Baghaei and several other high-ranking officials.
In 2013 presidential elections more than 460 candidates submitted registrations, however the Guardian Council approved the candidacy of only 8 applicants, rejecting the candidacy of Former Iranian president Hashemi Rafsanjani.
