Both marriage and divorce rate declined in Armenia in recent years, expert says
“16294 marriages were registered in Armenia in 2016,” Karine Kuyumjyan, Head of Census and Demography Department of Armenia’s National Statistical Service (NSS) said at today’s press conference, briefing on the marriage and divorces statistics in Armenia starting from the establishment of independence until now.
In her words, these results are based on the civil status records.
“In the first decade of the independence period the numbers of marriages and divorces decreased drastically. In case when in 1990-1991, more than 28.000 marriages were registered in our country, in 2001 the marriage rate dropped down to 11.000: the registered cases of marriage cut down by over 2.8 times. Already in the following decade, increase in marriage rate was registered, with the highest rate – 19706 marriages – registered in 2011,” Kuyumjyan detailed.
The NSS official informed that the marriage rate has again dropped in the last 3-4 years. As for the divorce cases, Kuyumjyan said that the divorce rate also changed in the mentioned period.
“In 1991, more than 3800 divorces were registered, with the figure dropping to 1300 in 2001. In addition, in the following years, the divorce cases rose in parallel to the increase in the marriage cases. The highest divorce rate was registered in 2014 with 4496 registered cases. In 2015 3648 divorces were recorded,” Karine Kuyumjyan added.
