“The nation-army formula is simply a must amid the threats coming towards Armenia from Azerbaijan and Turkey,” Vagharshak Harutyunyan, former Defense Minister of Armenia, said at the discussion of the topic “Nation-Army: Security Formula” within the “Nation-Army 2017” conference underway at the Karen Demirtchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan, Armenia.

In his words, today Armenia is in a state of war with Azerbaijan. There is a ceasefire agreement, however there is no peace agreement, being in the condition of a direct military threat from Turkey. Armenia has no diplomatic relations established with Turkey. The latter has blockaded Armenia, which is a war element pursuant to the international law.

V. Harutyunyan is not hopeful that the situation will change for the better, as all the superpowers are parts of the regional conflict, namely the Europe, U.S, Russia, China. The region is the sensitive part of the world, from where all the changes can emerge, that take place within centuries.

“That is why we must demonstrate vigilance. This formula shall settle the issue of ensuring our country’s military security, and the state security is provided by the entire country with all its spheres – economy, culture, education,” the former minister said.

In his words, having limited resources, Armenia manages to ensure its security due to the military officers and the public motivation. However, there comes a new phase, which requires review of the laws, the strategy and the projects.

V. Harutyunyan also noted, that the basis for providing security must be put on the military officers and servicemen. He said that the project “I Have an Honor” unveiled at today’s conference is a highly serious initiative, which will boost the army’s combat readiness and reduce the incidents.

“We need to raise the status of the officers, as that they become respected and accepted by our society, holding a proper position,” V. Harutyunyan noted.
