Unique surgery on carotid arteries carried out for the first time in Armenia
For the first time in Armenia a unique surgery on the two carotid arteries was carried out at Erebuni Medical Center in Yerevan to eliminate the risk of a stroke. The surgery has saved the life of a 68-year-old man who previously had a stroke with increased risk of complications from the new surgery.
The surgery was, that performed by the Head of Neck Vessel Surgery and Stroke Prevention Unit M.P Shatakhyan (MD, PhD) and his surgical team, that was unique not only in Armenia but also in the professional experience of the doctor himself.
The patient feels well and is about to discharge from the medical center in the coming days.
M.P Shatakhyan notes that around 100 surgeries are performed on the vertebral arteries at the medical center, which is a high number in the republic, given the fact that other medical institutions usually do not perform such surgeries. Dr. Shatakhyan notes, however, the number of surgeries is not enough for the population, considering complications of carotid artery cause stroke. Thus, these surgeries are the only possibility not only to avoid stroke but also save a life, its duration, and improve the life quality.
