Azerbaijan diplomat's wife avoids shoplifting charge at Bronx Marshalls
When is a theft not a theft? When the suspect has diplomatic immunity, of course, Daily News reports.
The wife of an Azerbaijani diplomat walked away scot free after she was caught using a baby stroller to shoplift merchandise from a Bronx department store.
A security guard at Marshalls on the Grand Concourse in Fordham caught Mehriban Jabrayilov trying to leave the store with $188.88 worth of items in a bag stuffed into the bottom of the baby stroller Tuesday, sources said.
Jabrayilov, 29, told cops called to the store she is married to Azerbaijan’s First Secretary Farid Jabrayilov, 32, and has diplomatic immunity.
Once police confirmed her identity and immunity status she was released. Diplomatic immunity typically extends to spouses.
The NYPD contacts the State Department, which has the ability to revoke a diplomat’s immunity, in such cases. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
The feds can seek a waiver of immunity to allow for prosecution, though that is typically done only with more serious crimes.
Mehriban Jabrayilov could not be reached.
