Local authorities should assume more active role in economic development - “Mayors for Economic Growth” programme launched in Yerevan
The official launch of the “Mayors for Economic Growth” initiative of the European Union was given on Friday in Yerevan. The four-year programme supports local authorities in the Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine).
As the head of the programme told reporters, the initiative focuses on sustainable economic development and aims to support mayors and local governments in their cooperation with local business and civil society in order to strengthen local economic growth, development and job creation. The total budget of the programme is 5 million Euro with additional funds available upon separate proposals.
In his words, interested municipalities can join the initiative and participate in number of events, including a grant competition, training, study trips, exchanges of expertise and partnership-building activities, as well as receiving consultations and information support.
‘We are sure Armenia will have active participation in the programme” the speaker said.
Armenian Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Development Vahe Terteryan stressed on his part the programme is quite relevant especially in the period of economic crisis. “Mayors for Economic Growth programme will enable the community authorities to elaborate on new cooperation prospects to improve economic satiation on the country.”
“I am sure, the programme along with other similar initiatives if the European Union will provide additional resources to communities to resolve issues,” the deputy minister said.
