Labor Day celebrated in Armenia
Labor Day is marked in Armenia today, on May 1, which is an annual holiday celebrated in number of countries all over the world that resulted from the labor union movement, to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers.
Most countries celebrate Labor Day on May 1, and it is popularly known as May Day and International Workers' Day.
The celebration of Labor Day has its origins in the Eight-hour day movement held by the American working class in May 1, 1886 which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. The strike followed a big clash with the police officers.
The Labor Day was first celebrated in 1890 in Austro-Hungary, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, the USA, France and a number of other states. Today, 66 countries worldwide celebrate May 1 as International Labor Day.
Labor Day has been one of the most important holidays in in the former Soviet Union, typically featuring elaborate workforce parades, including displays of military hardware and soldiers.
The holiday was abolished in Armenian after gaining the independence and was again included in the holiday list in 2005.
