Customs officers charged as part of investigation into Azerbaijani apples smuggling
Armenia’s Special Investigative Service (SIS) reports that the customs officer of the Preclearance Control Department of Bagratashen checkpoint and head of the same department’s shift are involved as defendants as part of an ongoing investigation into the case of smuggling of agricultural products into Armenia and receiving bribes by the officers of Armenia’s State Revenue Committee, which caused a great damage to the country. As the Press Service of the SIS reports, the latter are placed into custody.
The probe revealed that the above-mentioned customs officers received bribes from two individual entrepreneurs identified as G. A. and L. S. in exchange for allowing them to smuggle different kinds of agricultural products, including Azerbaijani apples that exceed the permitted quantity of 50kg into Armenia from Bagratashen checkpoint without the customs declaration and the required laboratory expertise.
Thus, the two customs officers have been charged for bribery under Part 3 (Point 2) of Article 311 of the RA Criminal Code, with detention chosen as a measure of restraint against them.
Preliminary probe is underway.
Notice: The person suspected in or accused of an alleged crime shall be presumed innocent unless proven guilty in the manner prescribed by the RA Criminal Procedure Code in accordance with the Court’s verdict made effective.
