Ara Babloyan elected new speaker of Armenia’s parliament
The National Assembly of Armenia voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to appoint Ara Babloyan as the new speaker of the country’s parliament. Babloyan, whose candidacy was nominated by the ruling Republican Party, was backed by 88 of the 100 members of the Armenian parliament, who participated in the secret ballot.
His rival Edmon Marukyan, nominated by the opposition “Elq” bloc, received only 12 votes in favor.
The vote results were published by the Chairman of the Accounts Committee Gagik Melikyan, who declared Babloyan as the new speaker of the National Assembly with congratulations.
