Minsk Group statement not that encouraging – political scientist
The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs mentions the missile fired by Azerbaijani forces across the Line of Contact, their statement, however, is not that encouraging, political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan told Panorama.am, when asked to comment on the Minsk Group latest statement .
In the political scientists’ words, despite the fact, that Azerbaijan remains the primary target of the co-chairmen’s calls, the mediators keep addressing the both sides of the conflict in their statement condemning ceasefire violations.
“This appears to be not the first statement where Azerbaijan comes under criticism. In one of their recent statement issued several months ago, the Co-Chairs called on Azerbaijan to adhere to its commitment in implementing reached agreements and maintaining the ceasefire. I tend to think this latest statement is unable to provide the minimal guarantees of preventing any escalation, likewise it cannot bring Azerbaijan back to the negotiation table,” Melik-Shahnazaryan said.
The Minsk Group latest statement suggests little for encouragement, as, according to the speaker, no concrete demands and criteria are set out aimed at Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijan continues showing little interest in the mediators’ concern and keeps implementing its previously adopted policy,” concluded the expert.
To remind, on May 18 the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs have issued a statement on the recent ceasefire violations at the Line of Contact between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan.
