‘No solution in sight’ in NK conflict – Armenian expert
“There is no solution is sight in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Armenia has no partners in the peace talks,” political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan, Director of Yerevan-based Caucasus Institute, noted at a press conference on Tuesday.
In his words, the meetings do not address the conflict settlement, but rather issues over the introduction of investigation mechanisms. “It is not an attempt aimed at settling the conflict, but rather a strategy to live amid that conflict,” the expert said.
In Mr. Iskandaryan’s words, with the Madrid Principles on the negotiating table, it does not influence the actual process of the conflict settlement. The political scientist believes that it is used as one of the mechanisms of propaganda struggle between various countries, the co-chairs and the sides of the conflict.
Touching upon the situation in the Artsakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact, the expert noted that there is no severe tension, adding that the level of violations remains almost the same as in the recent period. In his opinion, the April flare-up is not likely to repeat itself, however the escalation cannot be completely ruled out.
Mr. Iskandaryan also noted that Azerbaijan faces interesting developments currently. In parallel to financial crisis, confrontation has emerged within the country’s elite.
