Turkey’s Erdogan not likely to take a risk in relations with U.S. – Armenian expert
During the hearings of the U.S. Congress, the U.S. congressional representatives have demanded a tough response to the brutal attack of Turkish President Erdogan’s bodyguards against the peaceful demonstrators outside the residence of the Turkish Ambassador in Washington on May 16.
"We have a message for [Erdogan]: We don't need people like you visiting the United States anymore," Congressman Dana Rohrabacher announced.
Panorama.am has talked to turkologist Ruben Safrastyan over the issues whether the official Washington is likely to ban Erdogan from entering the country and the consequences of such a decision.
Mr. Safrastyan noted that after the brutal actions of Erdogan's bodyguards, the president’s entry to the United States must be banned.
“However, to tell the truth, I do not believe that it is likely. Naturally several U.S. congressmen made statements condemning the incident, however I think the U.S. will not take such a step,” the expert noted.
Asked whether Turkey is likely to show the same response as it was the case with Germany and Netherlands (regarding Turkey’s confrontation with the authorities of the countries ahead of the Turkish constitutional referendum) after such a ban is imposed, the turkologist recalled that in spite of his sweeping nature, Erdogan is a cunning political figure and will not demonstrate similar behavior in case of the U.S.
“Turkey largely depends on the United States and Erdogan will not allow himself to give ultimatums to that country. He will not take such a risk. In general, Erdogan’s visit to the U.S. was fruitless. In regard to Turkey-U.S. relations, they will not get better after that meeting.”
