Yerevan City Council convenes first session
The newly elected Council of Elders of the Yerevan City convened its first session on Friday, attended by 60 members of the 65-member self-government body of Armenia’s capital.
The opposition “Yerkir Tsirani” fraction, represented by five members at the Council, boycotted the first session, instead holding an open-air press conference outside the city hall.
To note, the ruling Republican Party (RPA) is represented by 45 members at the Council of Elders following the May 14 municipal elections, where the RPA, headed by acting Mayor Taron Margaryan claimed decisive victory, winning 71.25% of the vote, according to official results.
The other political force, namely “Exit” alliance is represented by 14 members, while “Yerkir Tsitani” party of outspoken oppositionist Zaruhi Postanjyan gained 5 places.
In his opening remarks, Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan congratulated the members of the Council, wishing productive work.
