“Armenian and Swedish Dads” photo exhibition kicks off at Yerevan subway station
A photo exhibition titled “Armenian and Swedish Dads” launched on Friday at the Republic Square station of Yerevan Metro. The exhibition features two different sets of photos – “Armenian Dads” and “Swedish Dads”. The “Armenian Dads” photo project has been initiated by film producer Raffi Niziblian, a father of four who was inspired by the exhibition “Swedish Dads” by Swedish photographer Johan Bävman.
“Taking care of children is equally the responsibility of the fathers. These photos depict fathers spending time with their children, feeding and educating them,” Niziblian told the reporters.
In the words of Martin Fredriksson, Charge d'Affaires of the Swedish Embassy to Armenia, present at the opening, this exhibition has a profound meaning. “An issue exists in the entire world; hard working couples do not want to have more than one kid in order not to damage their career. I believe both fathers and mothers should share equal parental responsibilities. There is a law in Sweden, which stipulates 450 days of paid vacation for parents when a child is born,” he noted.
Armenian photographer, a father of two Areg Balayan captured Armenian men with their kids. The project also involves Armenian fathers living in Yerevan.
A hero of the photos, 36-year-old Sergey Tantusyan told Panorama.am, that his work does not prevent him from taking care of his two boys together with his wife. He also did not share the preconceived views that only mothers take care of their kids in the majority of Armenian families. “Actually there is an equal parental care at all the families, be it a traditional or modern one. Otherwise, the families would not survive long,” he assured.
The photo exhibition will run until July 8.
