Archbishop Garegin Bekchian, locum tenens of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, has submitted an application on holding elections of the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople to Istanbul Governor's Office.
As Agos told Panorama.am, the application informed that Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan cannot fulfil his duties due to the illness. It also noted that a Commission on Patriarchal Election will be established, with list of its members to be further presented to the Governor's Office.
To remind, Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan fell into a coma in 2008 as a result of suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The elections of the new Patriarch has repeatedly been postponed for various reasons. On May 15, Archbishop Garegin Bekchian was elected as locum tenens of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople.
