PACE set to debate a motion for dismissal of Pedro Agramunt at October session
A motion for dismissal of the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Pedro Agramunt, has just been tabled by 158 component members of the Assembly belonging to 5 political groups and 36 national delegations. said the release, issued by the organization’s press service.
“We, the undersigned, consider that the President of the Parliamentary Assembly no longer enjoys the confidence of the Assembly, on the grounds that his behaviour seriously harms the reputation of the Parliamentary Assembly and tarnishes its image,” reads the Motion.
In line with the Rules of Procedure, as amended on 27 June 2017, the motion shall be put to a vote of the Assembly at the opening of the part-session which immediately follows its publication (Strasbourg, 9-13 October). The voluntary resignation of the President from his office shall terminate the procedure.
Until the final decision on the motion is taken, the President ceases to chair the meetings of the Assembly, the source added.
To remind, during the previous Spring session the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly passed a motion of no confidence in incumbent PACE President, Pedro Agramunt, and proceeded to work on the impeachment process.
PACE president appeared before a hearing after some members demanded a vote of no confidence following his unauthorized trip to Syria and meeting with President Bashar Assad.
On 27 June, the PACE adopted a resolution, which makes certain amendments in the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly. The changes allow to dismiss officials during their term of office. To note, the PACE initiated the above-mentioned amendments to dismiss President Pedro Agramunt.
