Bako Sahakyan regains Artsakh presidency
Bako Sahakyan has been re-elected as President of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh/NKR). Mr. Sahakyan regained precedency in a vote of 28 in favor and 4 against at a special session convened by the Artsakh National Assembly on Wednesday, head of the press service of Artsakh's Parliament Lilit Asryan told Panorama.am.
In her words, 32 out of the overall 33 MPs of the Karabakh Parliament took part in the voting. One of the MPs, Armo Tsaturyan, failed to attend the session due to health issues.
The other presidential candidate, Eduard Aghabekyan, gained 4 votes.
To remind, three factions of Artsakh's Parliament – Fatherland, Democracy and Dashnaktsutyun (Federation) – nominated the incumbent President Bako Sahakyan for presidency. Mr. Sahakyan was also supported by Arsen Arustamyan, the only non-partisan MP of the Parliakment. 21 votes were required for a candidate to be elected to the post.
Pursuant to Article 168 of the Artsakh Constitution, the president elected through the parliamentary voting will hold the office until 2020, when the mandate of the current Parliament expires. Afterwards, nationwide elections will be held in the country.
