Armenia birth rate falls, death rate rises in first half of 2017
The birth rate dropped 6.5% in Armenia within the first six months of 2017, compared to the same period of 2016, with the fertility rate declining in almost all the regions in the country, Karine Kuyumjyan, Head of Population Census and Demography Division of Armenia’s National Statistical Service, said at a news conference on Monday, presenting the provisional population data of the first half of 2017.
The lowest birth rate was recorded at Armenia’s Syunik Province, with the highest rate registered in Yerevan. 110 boys per 100 girls were born in the country within the first six months of this year.
The most popular first names among girls were Maria, Nare, Mane, Mary, Mariam, Ani, Anahit, Angelina, Elen, Milena. In terms of boys’ names, the most popular ones were David, Narek, Tigran, Hayk, Alex, Gor, Mark, Samvel, Aram and Artur.
From January to July 2017, the mortality rate grew in Armenia 2.1% (306 cases) compared to the same period of the past year. With 14,709 cases of death recorded in the indicated period, 57.3% were caused by diseases of the blood circulatory system, followed by neoplasms, respiratory and digestive system diseases, accidents, poisoning and injuries.
The lowest mortality rate was registered in Yerevan, with the highest rate recorded in Lori, Vayots Dzor, Shirak and Tavush Provinces.
