Analyst: Europe is actually not against U.S. sanctions targeting Russia
The U.S. sanctions targeting Russia have faced a strong resistance from the European countries, given the fact that the European companies are sometimes the ones that provide technology to Russia’s gas export pipelines. Thus, the Russia sanctions also pose a threat to the European countries and this might be the reason why Europe cannot welcome such sanctions indirectly targeting its companies.
Political analyst Styopa Safaryan, founder and head of Yerevan-based Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs, noted the aforesaid in an interview with Panorama.am, commenting on the question why Europe, that has posed its own sanctions on Russia, is uneasy about the fresh U.S. sanctions on that country.
“However Europe has to put up with it. And now matter how much it’s economy suffers, security is a key priority for Europe. After all, the differences between Europe and the U.S. are being settled over the transatlantic community.
In Styopa Safaryan’s words, actually Europe is not against the U.S. sanctions targeting Russia. On the contrary, some time ago Europe was even afraid that the U.S. President Donald Trump would lift the sanctions, thus making the European sanctions useless.
