Chief of General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri visits Turkey
The Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Mohammad Hossein Bagheri has paid a visit to Turkey. Apart from a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, the top Iranian official is also due to meet with the Turkish president.
Armen Israyelyan, Yerevan-based expert on Iranian studies, noted the aforesaid in a Facebook post. The analyst explained that the visit is important in a sense that, firstly such a meeting on the level of the top military officers of the two countries has not been held before. Secondly, after the appointment of the Chief of General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, new tasks have been assigned to the Staff conditioned with the regional developments and in this context, there is a need to clarify numerous issues with the Turkish side.
“Apparently, the key issues to be discussed between the Iranian chief of staff and Turkey’s military-political leadership will refer to the Persian Gulf region, namely the clarification of Iran’s and Turkey’s stances embraced towards Saudi Arabia, as well as the security zones in Syria, the border issues and one of the most important issues of mutual interest – the Kurdish issue and the independence referendum planned to be held by the Iraqi Kurds,” the expert added.
