Armenian church in Turkey to be restored, turned into cultural center
The Armenian church in Akşehir town of Turkey's Konya Province will be restored.
After its restoration, the church will become a cultural center, with a priest house near the church serving as a small hostel, Ermenihaber reports citing Agos.
The project titled “World humor village” is implemented by the Municipality of Akşehir, in cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Development. According to Salih Akkaya, the mayor of Akşehir, the reconstruction of an Armenian bath in the town is also planned, however it will be completed in coming years.
A total of 5 million Turkish liras have been allocated to implement the “World humor village” project, 1.72 mln of which will be spent during 2017.
The source adds that according to Raymond Kévorkian's book “The Armenian Genocide: A Complete History”, 4950 Armenians lived in Akşehir town before the Armenian Genocide. The Armenians had four schools and a church there, with the school standing out in the region with its quality education. The Armenian population of the region especially developed carpet weaving, leather and iron processing.
