Ruling Republican party rejects opposition call to launch parliamentary debates on leaving the EAEU
The ruling Republican Party (RPA) is against the proposal by the opposition Yelq (Exit) fraction to set up an ad hoc parliamentary commission to examine the costs and benefits of Armenia’s membership to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), RPA spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov told reporters at a regular briefing on Thursday.
Sharmazanov noted the proposal is not an agenda item, and Armenia’s authorities do not plan ‘to change foreign policy priorities, the Russian-Armenian allied partnership in particular.’
“I stressed at the previous session and reiterate that Russian-Armenian relations have shown development tendency in all directions, as evidenced by the meeting of the presidents of the two countries. Subsequently, the RPA does not discuss the proposal and it is strange why the initiative was even brought forward. We know that one plus one equals two, and no need to set up a commission to look into that. RPA rejects Yelq proposal and we oppose the establishment of such a commission,” Sharmazanov stressed.
To remind, last week Yelq opposition fraction that holds 9 mandates in the 102-member parliament conducted consultation and worked out a draft statement, calling on Armenia to leave the EAEU. The document and adjacent explanation notes that were officially put into circulation on September 11, cited negative economic consequences and security concerns as a result of country’s membership to the trade bloc.
