Sona Asatryan declared champion at the U18 European Youth Chess Championship
The European Youth Chess Championship held in Mamaia, Romania, from 4-15 September 2017, concluded with the representative of Armenia Sona Asatryan declared champion in the U18 age group. As the Chess Federation reported, Asatryan showed a remarkable result, gaining 7 points out of 9. She also improved her personal ratings by 128 points.
Another representative of Armenia Anna Sargsyan who competed in the U16 age group, scored 7 points out of 9 and shared the 2-4 places. Robert Piliposyan playing in the U10 category got 7 points and shared the 3-7 places.
Hayk Martirosyan playing in the U18 age category and Shant Sargsyan in the U16 age group had good chances to win medals. Yet in the final round both players suffered defeats and were left out of the winning places.
To note, the European Youth Chess Championship is played according to the Swiss System in 9 rounds, with time control 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one. The Championship will be played in 6 age categories: under 8, under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 18, boys and girls separately.
The total amount of all prizes and presents is 40.000 EUR at the minimum.
