Chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia to observe the Kurdish referendum vote
The Chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia Aram Sargsyan departed for Iraqi Kurdistan on an observation mission at the independence referendum of the region slated for September 25. As Sargsyan’s assistant Ruben Bakhshyan told Panorama.am, Sargsyan left for Iraq at the invitation of the Central Electoral Commission of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
“We have a long record of cooperation with the Kurdish Democratic Party, that is the reason the invitation came. As far as I know, Aram Sargsyan is the sole politician from Armenia to follow the vote in a status of observer,” said Bakhshyan, adding, the party chairman will be back to Armenia after September 29 and is set to hold a press conference to sum up the results of his observation mission.
To remind, the Kurdish referendum is bound to be held on September 25. The Iraqi government and several other countries, including the United States and Turkey, have opposed the referendum. On Monday, the Iraqi supreme court voted to suspend the plebiscite as being unconstitutional and illegal under Iraqi law. The Iraqi parliament had earlier voiced a similar sentiment, declaring that no matter what the outcome, the referendum would not be accepted as legitimate.
