Armenia’s State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition detects violations in labelling of number of dairy products
The Armenian State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition has conducted inspections in the production and sales spheres of sweetened condensed milk, sour cream, grease and melted cheese, detecting violations in a total of 30 companies.
The companies were given a warning to eliminate the issues within five-day period, the commission reported in a release.
The first stage of the study included trade chains, with monitoring conducted in supermarkets, which revealed a number of issues. In particular, all the cases of violations featured the name ‘sweetened condensed milk’ on price tags, whereas the product on sale was actually made of vegetable oils and other ingredients.
In addition to this, the Russian language labelling of a product clearly noted that it is made of vegetable oils combined with additives, whereas the supplier has translated it as ‘condensed milk’. Similar violations were also detected in sour cream, grease and melted cheese product labelling.
According to the commission, some of the business operators have admitted their violations, noting the issues were eliminated immediately after the launch of proceedings. The discussions also revealed that the business entities were misled by the suppliers, who delivered the mentioned products under the names of condensed milk, sour cream, grease and melted cheese.
The commission calls on the people to be more attentive when buying the mentioned products since there are two types of products of this kind in the market - vegetable and animal origin, which are substantially different from each other in terms of both their quality and prices.
The commission also urges the business entrepreneurs to provide only reliable and complete information on a product to the customers.
