Armenian-Azeri summit in Geneva aimed at reducing tensions – analyst
The recent Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting in Geneva was linked to the Eastern Partnership Summit, with Azerbaijan trying to enhance the principles of territorial integrity and inviolability of borders through the help of some of its supporters, an Armenian analyst said Wednesday.
“Azerbaijan’s goal is to get more allies among the Eastern Partnership member states. The county wants the unrecognized Transnistrian republics – South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Artsakh – to be viewed in the same context. Whether we like it or not, that context influenced the entire process. Following last year’s April war, Armenia seemingly reached some strategic goals, with agreements reached in May-June.
Azerbaijan was against the implementation of the reached agreements, with Armenia, in its turn, rejecting the possibility of further talks unless the agreements were not brought to life,” Chairman of Yerevan Press Club (YPC) Boris Navasardyan told a news conference in Yerevan.
Speaking about Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting in Geneva, Mr. Navasardyan noted boycotting the talks for a long time was not advisable for Armenia in strategic terms, since it negatively affected the country’s image.
“It was clear that sooner or later Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan would agree to hold that meeting. The same was expected from Aliyev, since he believes Azerbaijan can return to the agenda favorable to that country, i.e. the Madrid Principles. Regarding the Geneva summit, its key purpose was to reduce the tensions in general, instead of reaching certain agreements. The latest scandals involving Azerbaijan, I think, can inspire hope Armenia gained some tactical benefits from that meeting,” the speaker concluded.
