Armenian police set to keep a national DNA database
The Police of Armenia proposes to establish a national DNA database, Deputy Police Chief of Armenia, Police Mayor-General Vardan Yeghiazaryan stated on Monday at the National Assembly Defense and Security Committee sitting.
The changes will enable amendments to the RA Law on Police expected to be debated at the parliament and are aimed at conforming the law to the Constitution of the country.
Yeghiazaryan explained the move is thought to be an important measure to reveal crimes, since criminals often wear gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints at the crime scene, while DNA samples will enable the law enforcement to identify the offenders under the new system.
“We are too late in initiating these amendments and today urgent measures are needed to regulate the field,” Deputy Police Chief of Armenia insisted, adding the respective package has been gratuitously provided by Interpol.
Yeghiazaryan next pointed out to the international practice of keeping DNA databases throughout the world.
