New electric train tested in Yerevan with Armenian, Russian ministers on board
Armenian minister of Transport Vahan Martirosyan along with his Russian counterpart Maxim Sokolov visited today “Sasuntsi Davit” railway station of Yerevan to test the new, electric train imported from Russia. The ministers along with the Director General of the "South-Caucasian Railway" Sergey Valko travelled to Masis station in the first test of the train.
As the ministry reported in a release, the electric train is currently in the stage of testing to see whether it corresponds to the Armenian relief conditions and what modernization updates are required.
The electric train will be used to travel to Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city. Minister Martirosyan noted the destination is chosen considering the high flow of passengers as well as the government-adopted programme of tourism development in Gyumri.
In the minister’s words, the "South-Caucasian Railway", which is the rail operator in Armenia, will decide on the ticket prices, while the ministry will work to prevent a price hike. The price increase may concern the economy and business class seats, Martirosyan added.
