Iranian MP calls for adequate countermeasures against Azerbaijan: expert
The presidents of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia are scheduled to hold a trilateral meeting in Tehran on Wednesday. Interestingly enough, the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission held a discussion on Azerbaijan in attendance of Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, ahead of Ilham Aliyev’s visit, an Armenian expert on Iranian studies said Wednesday.
“In particular, Valiollah Dadashi, a lawmaker of Astara electoral district, asked Zarif why Iran does not act in line with Azerbaijan's steps, i.e. Iran has lifted visa requirements for the Azerbaijani citizens, while Azerbaijan has not done the same,” Armen Israyelyan wrote on Facebook.
According to the expert, the Iranian deputy reminded that ahead of President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to Baku in August 2016, the Azeri authorities assured the Iranian side they would set vise-free regime for Iranian citizens, which, however, did not happen.
“Ahead of Aliyev’s visit to Tehran, the Iranian parliamentarian expect a clear reply. By the way, the Iranian sources do not provide further details over Zarif’s comments on the question, however they note that the foreign minister’s reply was not satisfactory for the deputies,” he concluded.
