Serzh Sargsyan: Armenia ready to outcompete other tomato suppliers to Russia
Armenia is ready to compete and even to outcompete other tomato suppliers to the Russian market, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said Wednesday.
“Certainly when a supplier faces problems, it sometimes becomes an opportunity for others. We took advantage of this last year. This branch (growing tomatoes) is also developing in Russia, however the market is so big that the growth of the number of players here does not bother anyone. It is only useful,” Sargsyan said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to the news agency, the export of tomatoes to Russia by Spayka company, the biggest Armenian producer of fruits and vegetables, grew to 30,000 tons per year in 2016-2017.
Russia imposed embargo on a number of goods from Turkey since January 1, 2016. The Turkish tomato import ban continued one year and 10 months. Only recently did Russia partly reverse the restriction on tomato imports from Turkey, allowing imports only from three companies.
