Turkish media attack the noted journalist for a photo near the Armenian Genocide Memorial
Turkish journalist Amberin Zaman has posted a photo on Twitter, posing near the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Boston, United States. As Ermenihaber reports, Zaman’s Twitter post is accompanied by #ArmenianGenocidememorial, #Boston, #neveragain hashtags which are widely used in reference to the Armenian Genocide.
Turkish correspondent for The Economist, Zaman has long been a supporter of minority rights in Turkey and recognizes the Armenian Genocide as fact, believing that the Turkish government must reconcile with its past. In one of recent initiatives, Zaman has participated in the “100 seconds” project that featured testimonies of Genocide survivors published by the National Archive of Armenia, where the journalist read an extract from Armenian Genocide survivor Sara Muradian's testimony.
Earlier Amberin Zaman was sacked as a journalist for HaberTurk because of columns that were considered unacceptable by the government and even was labeled as a "militant in the guise of a journalist, a shameless woman…” by Turkish President Erdoghan.
This time Zaman’s tweet has again caused a stir on Turkish segment of Twitter and local media sources. One of online news outlets (Ensonhaber.com) named the journalist “the speaker of terrorist structures” accusing her in anti-Turkish activities.
