Analyst: Russia constantly trying to show it is worthy to its victorious generation
All the states that disagree with Russia as presented as successors and keepers of the Nazi case, an Armenian political scientist said Monday, commending on the Russian draft resolution condemning glorification of Nazism, which was approved by a UN General Assembly committee on 18 November.
Earlier a group of Russian parliamentarians, lawyers and experts announced about the formation of a working group on this issue, with the statements of the group also targeting Armenia as a country, which “glorifies the nationalists”
Speaking to Panorama.am, Hayk Balanyan stated the victory at the Second World War and the anti-fascist rhetoric are important tools for Russia to unite its population inside the country, as well as to appear representative to the outside world.
“The war ended in 1945, however with such steps the Russian authorities are trying to show they are the worthy successor to the generation that secured the victory and continue their legacy. The leaders of this propaganda believe such a manipulation of the public opinion allows to gain public sympathy with the help of the anti-Nazi movement also outside the country,” the analyst remarked.
According to Mr. Balanyan, in the 19th century Russia presented itself as a defender of Christians from the Ottoman Empire. Currently the Nazi Germany does not exist, however acting as a pioneer of the anti-Nazi movement, Moscow seeks to use this rhetoric to uphold the military-political, diplomatic, historical achievements of the victorious Soviet Union, justifying and reaffirming them.
“Nazism is certainly a terrible and unacceptable thing, but we are currently dealing with a tool to realize modern political goals. Russian military structures and special services have never “been suspected” of sympathizing Armenians, and this information “run over” should not be unexpected for us. Certainly, this is based on the signing of the [Armenia-EU] Association Agreement, and the author does not hide this fact. There is nothing left to say. This is the way they are and will never change so long as we fail to change inside,” he highlighted.
The analyst believes if Moscow is actually determined to once again to call off this distressful Agreement to show that Armenian-related matters must be discussed with Moscow instead of Yerevan, it will succeed, since the country will not face serious confrontation.
The political scientist stressed any information flow would not attract much attention if the country were firm inside, adding currently any ‘bullshit by a semi-literate reporter’ causes uproar among the society. Mr. Balanyan underlined Armenia needs to learn to react even in the hardest situations in line with its interests.
