Armenian army officer who lost both legs, one arm becomes Armwrestling World Cup champion
Major of the Armenian Armed Forces, athlete Sargis Stepanyan, who lost both of his legs and one arm, has claimed two gold medals at the Armwrestling World Cup for Disabled 2017 held in Rumia, Poland to win the champion’s title, he said in a Facebook post.
Sargis grabbed the first gold medal at the PIDH-sitting event (athletes with upper limbs impairment) in the 80kg weight class, with the second gold conquered in the 75kg PID-sitting (athletes with mobility impairment).
The athlete also snatched a silver in Senior men left PID OPEN event.
“I share my victories with you with all my heart,” he wrote on Facebook.
Sargis Stepanyan was injured during a mine explosion, losing his two legs and the right arm while trying to take out his fellow serviceman from a minefield in summer 2014, when the Azerbaijani military launched a sabotage infiltration attempt at one of Armenian military posts.
Major Stepanyan has been awarded with the Armenian Defense Ministry “Marshal Baghramyan” Medal and the Medal "For Courage" by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR).
