The Egyptian military killed 30 ISIS militants in strikes in central Sinai on Friday after an attack on a mosque in the peninsula's north killed 235, Haaretz reported, citing the local media.

Earlier, security sources and eyewitness said the Egyptian air force conducted airstrikes in northern Sinai, near the site of the attack in Bir al-Abed, west of El Arish. The strikes were concentrated in several mountainous areas surrounding Bir al-Abed, where militants were believed to be hiding out, the security sources said.

235 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured Friday in the assault on the al Rawdah Sufi mosque in Bir al-Abed, believed to be the deadliest terror attack on the country's soil.

According to CNN, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has vowed to respond to the massacre with "brute force."

Al Rawdah mosque is known as the birthplace of an important Sufi cleric. Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam that some jihadists consider heretical.

No one has claimed responsibility, but Friday's strike bears the hallmarks of an attack by ISIS.
