58 reporters killed in 2017 – IFJ
58 journalists and media professionals were killed in 2017, Anthony Bellanger, the Secretary General of the world's largest journalists' organization - The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) told a press conference on Saturday in Russia, Ria Novosti reported.
Bellanger’s remarks came during the Federation’s regular session held in Russia.
To note, the IFJ compiles the annual list of journalists and media staff killed from information from its affiliates and other credible sources, after having established a clear or reasonable link between the killing and the professional activity of the victim. While every effort is made to consider all cases that are publicly known, the list does not pretend to include all killings of journalists and media staff.
Bellanger has informed that the Federation is drafting legislation to secure the reporters; safety and has applied to the UN and the heads of major states.
Meanwhile, the Secretary general noted that almost one in two women journalists have suffered sexual harassment, psychological abuse, online trolling and others forms of gender-based violence (GBV) while working.
