Parliament rejects opposition faction’s proposal to withdraw from EEU
A regular sitting of the second session of the parliament of 6th convocation kicked off on Tuesday morning. During the session, the National Assembly put into discussion a draft statement made by Yelk opposition faction on initiating a process for Armenia's withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
During the parliamentary debates on the draft statement, Samvel Farmanyan a member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, touched upon discussions around the integration to the EEU and EU, adding Armenia has managed to successfully pursue its interests in the foreign political agenda, and ‘artificial contradiction between the two unions does not lie in Armenia’s interests.’
A total of 76 MPs voted against and only 6 lawmakers for the draft statement.
During the exchange of thoughts following the voting, Yelk faction member Edmon Marukyan hit back Farmanyan’s claims. “A contradiction has been observed in the arguments presented by our Republican colleagues. I suggest you visit the provinces and explain to people why the food prices are so high and why they will further increase starting from January 1. Explain to people that Armenia is on its way to development, the food prices are not growing,” he said, pointing to the record surge in butter prices in the country.
