History Museum of Armenia presents its replenished collection
The numismatic collections of the History Museum of Armenia have been replenished with 300 units this year. The new acquisitions are mainly donations.
Serozh Avagyan's collection which contains 243 coins, is worthy of special mention among them. These gold, silver and copper coins, dating from the 4th century BC to 18th century, represent issues by Alexander of Macedon and other famous rulers of different countries – Egypt, Bactria, Parthia, the Roman Empire, Armenia, the Byzantine Empire and the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, the museum said in a Facebook post.
The purchase group of 45 copper coins consists of Byzantine folles, dating from the end of the 10th century and the 11th century and Islamic coins of the 11th -13th centuries. These coins, found near the Yererouk Basilica about 5 km away from Ani, fully correspond with the numismatic material, found at the excavations of Ani, in their composition and chronology.
