Russia tries to show it always has Iran’s back, expert says
Russia attempts to show the United States is interfering in Iran’s internal affairs, while the country is trying to assist the Iranian authorities in political affairs, Armenian political expert Tevan Poghosyan said in an interview with Panorama.am, commenting on the information disseminated by Russian media over the alleged arrest of former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Poghosyan, who also heads the International Center for Human Development, stated that Russia attempts to highlight the ex-Iranian president can come up with some initiatives to promote the unrest across the country. Moreover, Russia wants to draw the international community’s attention to the fact the US voiced its support for the Iranian protesters.
“At present Russia’s problem is to show that the US is meddling in Iran’s domestic affairs, while Russia is trying to contribute to the policy of the Iranian authorities making revelations to their benefit. Russia shows that it always has Iran’s back and will pursue neighbourly relations with that country as long as Iran has disagreements with the US,” the expert noted.
According to Poghosyan, it is still hard to state why the Russian media spread such an unconfirmed information. “They are probably looking for sensations. Perhaps they have found some sources trying to pursue a policy on that basis. But with the news on Ahmadinejad’s arrest denied there is no need to comment on such a step by Russia. Politics, which Russia was trying to adopt, if fact did not succeed,” he added.
To note, the news on the arrest of former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been dismissed. Earlier is was reported that Ahmadinejad had been arrested for allegedly inciting unrest against the regime.
