NGO suggests Garo Paylan’s nomination for Nobel Peace Prize
“Hamshenuhi” (Hamshen-Armenian Woman) International Women's Association has circulated a statement that nominates Turkish lawmaker of Armenian descent representing Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) for a Nobel Peace Prize. The President of the Association Saida Ohanyan informed the organization has submitted a letter to the Nobel Committee, suggesting the nomination of Paylan “who devoted whole his life to protection of the rights of Armenians and other Indigenous population in the region.”
“He is one of the few who has assumed the responsibility to protect humanitarian rights, the rights of indigenous people, religious and national minorities,” the statement said, adding Paylan’s efforts come despite constant threats and pressures over his activities by nationalist and extremist forces backed by authorities.
The Association calls for all individuals and organizations protecting women’s rights and, in general, human’s rights to back and joint the initiative or make individual submissions suggesting Paylan’s nomination.
To note, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for selecting the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. A nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize may be submitted by any persons who are qualified to nominate. Last date for receipt of the nominations for the Prize is January 30.
