Emmanuel Macron: Karabakh settlement requires ‘strong compromise’
“The Nagorno Karabakh conflict is not frozen and its settlement is of high importance,” President of France Emmanuel Macron stated Tuesday at a joint news conference with Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan.
Following the talks at the Elysee Palace, Macron noted that the conflict settlement requires ‘strong compromise,” pointing to the necessity to hold meetings at the presidential and ministerial level.
“I know advocating for peace is quite hard and I wish those meetings to bring concrete results. During the meeting with President [Sargsyan] I reaffirmed that France remains committed in contributing to the settlement process along with its American and Russian partners,” Macron said.
President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, in turn, described the Karabakh conflict as “one of the most sensitive issues of the region,” adding Armenia highly values the approach and continuous efforts of France as an OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairing state aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict and establishment of a lasting peace, stability and cooperation in the region.
“Armenia is committed to continue the negotiations under the auspices of the Co-Chairing countries. It is known that the people of the Nagorno Karabakh is struggling for freedom and self-determination, and that struggle could only be without success,” Sargsyan said.
