UAE company conducts wind resource assessment for construction of wind farm in Armenia’s southern province
The UAE-registered “Access Infra Central Asia Limited” which plans to construct a wind farm in Armenia has installed an 80-meter-high tower in southern Gegharkunik province of Armenia to conduct wind power performance measurement. As the ministry of energy infrastructure and natural resources reported in a release, another tower is planned to be erected in another area in April.
It is reminded that in Spring 2017 the Armenian Government approved the lease of up to 1,250 hectares of community-owned land in Gegharkunik marz to the “Access Infra Central Asia Limited” in order to ensure the implementation of a pilot program for electric power generation using renewable energy. The planned capacity of wind power plant is up to 150 MW; the size of planned investment – USD 150 million.
“If expectations come true, we may build a wind power plant within two-three years that would be unique in the world. It would be the highest plant built in a mountainous area equipped with innovation solutions,” Deputy Minister Hayk Harutyunyan said as quoted by the ministry.
According to the source, the Spanish company Acciona is another company interested in building wind power stations in Armenia. The respective Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the project envisaging construction of o wind farms of 100-150 MW capacity was signed last year.
As part of wind assessment preparatory works, two wind monitoring systems have been installed in the country, the release said.
