Armenian delegate at PACE calls on Turkey to cease military offensive in Syria’s Afrin
Armenian lawmaker Edmon Marukyan, representing the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) made a statement on behalf of the group regarding the military operation of Turkey in Syria’s Afrin. As Bright Armenia Party press service reported, Marukyan’s statement came at a discussion on “The Turkish military intervention in Syria” held today at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg.
Marukyan, in particular, spoke of the full-scale intrusion of Turkey in Afrin province with the free Syrian Army that “had severe consequences both in the civilian population living in the province since they are the target of shelling and bombardments from the Turkish air force.”
Marukyan next noted before the offensive the region was one of the few places where relative stability was maintained, while due to the Turkish actions the number of civilian victims is increasing day by day, while thousands of Syrians are reported to flee their place of residence.
“ALDE group is deeply concerned with the emerged situation and the civilian casualties in the result of attacks on peaceful towns and cities. We hereby call on Turkey to cease military actions and refrain from further escalation of the clashes and attacks,” the Armenian lawmaker stressed, also voicing the ALDE group call upon all the international community “to intervene in and stop further rise of violence and the mass violations of human rights in Syria.”
