Armenia’s Aronian among leaders at Gibraltar Chess Festival
Armenian GM Levon Aronian defeated Sethuraman S.P. of India at Round 9 of Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2018 (10 rounds, Swiss system) held on Wednesday.
With the chess tournament nearing the end, the Armenian chess star has collected 7 points to share the 1-5 spots with Hikaru Nakamura (US), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France), Richard Rapport (Hungary), and Daniil Dubov (Russia), the National Olympic Committee reported.
Another Armenian representative Lilit Mkrtchian outplayed Elizabeth Hapala (Austria) with black pieces at the penultimate round. With 5 points collected, Mkrtchian holds the 100th spot.
At today’s Round 10, Levon Aronian will face Hikaru Nakamura, while Lilit Mkrtchian with compete with Italian Luca Moroni.
