Armenia’s permanent population shrank by 13,200 last year to stand at 2,972,900 as of 1 January 2018, while the population was estimated at 2,986,100 as of January 1, 2017, the statistics show.

According to the figures released by the National Statistical Service (NSS), capital city Yerevan has a total of 1,076,400 population. The regions with the largest population are Armavir and Ararat with 257,400 and 265,400 people respectively. Vayots Dzor is the least populated in Armenia, with 49,800 people living in the region.

The average age of Armenia's permanent population was 36.2 years as of the beginning of 2017 (35.9 years in 2016) – 34.3 years for men and 38 years for women. 

In January-December 2017, the population viability rate, i.e. the ratio of birth and death rates stood at 137.8% against the 143.8% recorded in the indicated period of 2016.

To note, an estimated number of 37,699 babies were born in Armenia in 2017, while the number was 40,592 in 2016 and 41,763 – in 2015.

Meantime, Armenia had a rate of 259 divorces per 1,000 marriages last year, with 224 divorce cases recorded in January-December 2016.
