Around 40,000 people have survived cancer in Armenia, director at Fanarjian National Center of Oncology says
The totally renovated General and Children's Chemotherapy Department was opened today at Fanarjian National Center of Oncology in Yerevan. The ceremony was attended by President Sargsyan who was briefed on the activities of the new department and observed modern facilities of the center. The new department will start operations starting Monday.
Professor Armen Tananyan, the Director at the National Center of Oncology told reporters rising incidence of oncology diseases is observed throughout the world, including in Armenia that also result in increase of mortality rate.
"However, along that statistics, we have achievements. Around 40 thousand people in Armenia have survived cancer. I am confident over the coming years we will manage to increase the number. Among many achievements of the Center over the past years were its total renovation, it has been equipped with up-to-date apparatus, while the new management has secured making investments worth around 82 million AMD," Tananyan noted.
In his words, around 5-8 thousand chemotherapy procedures are performed in the republic with the vast majority of them (80 %) at Fanarjian National Center of Oncology.
As the Director of the Center informed the new department consists of three facilities. The first one is designed for the medical personnel, the second is the chemotherapy division for stationary treatment, while the third one - for daytime stationary patients.
"About 80-100 patients daily undergo chemotherapy at our center. Thanks to the cooperation of private and state funds, the Center has obtained the latest radiation therapy treatment equipment - Varian Clinac iX, which is unique in the republic also for its affordable treatment costs."
Tananyan said that the average cost for a course of radiation therapy in European countries is around 25,000 Euros, in Iran 8,000 USD, while in Armenia is will cost up to 3,000 USD.
