Secretaries General of Armenian, Swiss Parliaments discuss cooperation prospects
Ara Saghatelyan, Chief of Staff-Secretary General of the Armenian National Assembly, on Wednesday met with Philippe Schwab, Secretary General of the Swiss Federal Assembly and President of the Association of Secretaries General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, who visited Armenia as part of the Swiss parliamentary delegation.
During the meeting, Ara Saghatelyan presented the ongoing reforms in the National Assembly and the its staff based on the new role assumed by the parliament stemming from the amended Constitution, the Parliament’s press office told Panorama.am.
The Armenian official noted the imperative of making staff reforms is conditioned with the need to develop expert and analytical capacities and parliamentary surveillance mechanisms with respective measures underway in that direction.
Secretary General Philippe Schwab noted the staff of the Swiss Parliament masters a great potential for expertise and proposed to cooperate with the Armenian Parliament’s staff on different platforms in this matter.
Mr Saghatelyan informed the Armenian National Assembly has submitted an application for membership to the Association of Secretaries General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which is scheduled to be discussed at the upcoming session of the Association’s general committee on March 26 in Geneva.
The Swiss official welcomed this initiative, documenting the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments is an important platform for cooperation and exchange of experience between the Secretaries General.
Philippe Schwab stressed he will thoroughly examine Armenia’s membership application as the president of that structure.
