Armenia elected vice chair of UNESCO Cultural Heritage body
Armenia was elected on Tuesday as vice chair of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. As the country's foreign ministry reported in a release, the Committee members unanimously approved Armenia's candidacy to hold the position for a term of one year. Armenia was nominated at the 12th session of the Intergovernmental Committee, held in South Korea from December 4-9, 2017, however, the final decision was made during electronic consultations in February.
To note, Armenia is a member to the Intergovernmental Committee for the period of 2016-2020.
The core functions of the Intergovernmental Committee are to promote the objectives of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage provide guidance on best practices and make recommendations on measures for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage. It further examines the nominations submitted by States Parties for the inscription of intangible cultural heritage elements on the Lists of the Convention as well as proposals for programmes and projects. The Committee is also in charge of granting international assistance.
