RPA formally nominates Armen Sargsyan as Armenia's presidential candidate
The Ruling Republican Party (RPA) of Armenia has formally nominated Armen Sargsyan, the Ambassador of Armenia to the United Kingdom and the country's former Prime Minister, as their candidate for the forth president of Armenia.
As the Head of RPA faction at the National Assembly Vahram Baghdasaryan told reporters, the decision came after the meeting of the lawmakers from the ruling coalition of RPA and ARF-Dashnaktsutyun.
"Armen Sargsyan presented the results of the meetings with different circles of the public and reiterated his final decision to assume the highly responsible post," Baghdasaryan said, adding the formal nomination envisaged a collection of signatures among the lawmakers of the ruling coalition that was successful done.
To note, Armenia will transfer to the parliamentary system of government in April, according to the new constitution adopted in referendum held in in 2015. According to the new constitution the president with mostly ceremonial role is going to be elected for 7 years by the National Assembly. It is expected, that the National Assembly where RPA holds majority will elect the fourth president by March 9, 2018, and the new prime minister after April 9.
