Seven charged with drug smuggling from Iran to Armenia
Seven people have been charged with illegal drug trafficking in Armenia as part of the criminal case being investigated by the Erebuni and Nubarashen Investigative Division of Armenia’s Investigative Committee.
Criminal charges have been brought against three Iranian and four Armenian citizens, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
The preliminary probe concluded that the drugs have been smuggled from Iran. The Iranian citizens used various tricks to smuggle the drugs into Armenia, namely by hiding the packages in household appliances imported to Armenia on passenger buses, as well as using the trick of body packing. The drugs were later transported to a rented apartment and sold to a group of Armenians.
Thus, one of the Iranian citizens has been charged under the requirements of Point 1 of Part 4 of Article 267.1 (2 counts) and Point 2 of Part 3 of Article 266 of Armenia’s Criminal Code. Charges have been pressed against the other citizen of Iran under Point 1 of Part 4 of Article 267.1 and Point 2 of Part 3 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code, with the third citizen of the Islamic Republic charged under Point 2 of Part 3 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code. Detention was ordered as a pretrial measure against two of them.
Two of the Armenian citizens are facing charges under the requirements of Point 2 of Part 3 of Article 266 of Armenia’s Criminal code. Charges have been brought against the third Armenian citizen under Point 2 of Part 2 of Article 266, Point 2 of Part 3 of Article 266 and Part 1 of Article 268 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, with the fourth citizen facing charges under the requirements of Point 2 of Part 2 of Article 268 of the Criminal Code. Detention has been chosen as a pretrial measure against three of them.
Within the framework of the ongoing criminal investigation, the police raided apartments of several people, as well as one of the night clubs operating in Yerevan’s Kentron administrative district. As a result, they found and confiscated different types of narcotics in particularly large amounts, including psychotropic substances, marijuana, as well as more than about 381 grams of methamphetamine, with the street value of one gram totalling to AMD 100,000.
The criminal case has been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office to determine its investigative jurisdiction.
