Ruling RPA faction votes down Electoral Code reform proposal
Armenia’s opposition Tsarukyan Alliance made a proposal to launch discussions and hearings to make amendments to the country’s Electoral Code at a regular session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, Panorama.am reports.
The bloc’s MPs voiced their opposition to the existing electoral system, arguing that the rating voting system violates the principles of democracy, with an MP candidate who receives more votes yielding his/her seat to the one who gains fewer votes.
All the parliamentary factions were in support of the amendments to the Electoral Code, except the ruling Republic Party of Armenia (RPA).
The proposal was rejected with 39 votes in favour and 56 votes against, with only the RPA faction MPs voting against the measure.
